Frequently Asked Questions

What does an orthopedic surgeon treat?

Orthopedic surgeons treat conditions affecting bones, joints, muscles, ligaments, and tendons. This includes fractures, arthritis, sports injuries, back pain, joint replacements, and congenital musculoskeletal conditions.

Do I need a referral to see an orthopedic surgeon?

It depends on your insurance plan. PPO and POS plans typically allow direct access to specialists without a referral. HMO plans usually require a referral from your primary care physician. Check with your insurance provider to confirm.

What should I bring to my first orthopedic appointment?

Bring your insurance card, photo ID, a list of current medications, any relevant imaging (X-rays, MRI reports), and a written summary of your symptoms including when they started and what makes them better or worse.

How long does it take to get an appointment with an orthopedic surgeon?

Wait times vary by location and urgency. Routine appointments may take 1-4 weeks. Urgent referrals for fractures or acute injuries are often seen within days. Calling the office directly is the fastest way to check availability.

Does orthopedic treatment always require surgery?

No. Many orthopedic conditions are treated conservatively with physical therapy, medication, injections, bracing, or activity modification. Surgery is typically considered when conservative treatments have not provided adequate relief after 3-6 months.

How do I find an orthopedic surgeon in MANSFIELD, MA?

AdvOrtho lists multiple orthopedic surgeons in MANSFIELD, MA. You can filter by sub-specialty (knee, hip, spine, shoulder, sports medicine, hand, foot & ankle, or pediatric), compare credentials, and request an appointment directly from each provider's profile.

Does this orthopedic surgeon in MANSFIELD accept my insurance?

Insurance acceptance varies by provider. We recommend calling the office directly at the number listed on this profile to verify your specific plan is accepted before scheduling an appointment. Many orthopedic practices in MA accept major plans including UnitedHealthcare, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, and Cigna.

Absolutely Fantastic Doctor

If there were a scale beyond 5 stars, Dr. McDonald would earn a 10 every single time. I first walked into his office suffering from debilitating neck issues. I was experiencing "lightning" burning sensations down my arms, as well as severely reduced range of motion, and I couldn't even lift my head properly. I was frankly worried about the future, especially because I assumed my arthritis would permanently limit my recovery. Beyond his incredible surgical skill, what truly sets Dr. McDonald apart is the environment he creates. He doesn't act like a doctor who is just checking boxes on medical charts; he treats you like family. From the first appointment, he made me feel completely comfortable. It is rare to find a physician who creates a space where you feel safe explaining anything without embarrassment, he listens like a friend who genuinely has your best interests at heart. I wanted to make sure my recovery was completed, so I waited until 7 months post-surgery, after healing, full recovery, and two successful follow-up appointments to write this because the entire experience matters. The results have been nothing short of amazing. The "lightning" sharp pain stopped almost immediately after surgery. My range of motion is far better than I ever expected; in fact, it is better than I thought was possible given my arthritis. I told Dr. McDonald that my goal was to recover in time for the summer weather, and thanks to his expertise, I was able to do exactly that. If you are looking for a doctor who combines top-tier medical skill with a compassionate, friendly, and truly caring approach, look no further. Dr. McDonald is phenomenal. Dr. McDonald, if you are reading this! Thank You 🙏
