Why we built this
Finding the right orthopedic surgeon is harder than it should be. Insurance directories are out of date. Google Maps surfaces whoever pays for ads. Word of mouth helps if you know the right people.
AdvOrtho pulls from the National Provider Identifier (NPI) registry - the authoritative federal database of licensed healthcare providers - and surfaces structured, searchable information about every active orthopedic surgeon in the country. Credentials, subspecialties, hospital affiliations, practice locations, and accepted insurance.
It is free for patients. Surgeons can claim their profile to add photos, a bio, and practice details. The directory does not accept paid placement in search results - ranking is determined by location and specialty match, not advertising spend.
How it works
NPI registry data
Provider data is sourced from the CMS National Provider Identifier registry, updated regularly. Every listed surgeon holds an active NPI and orthopedic taxonomy classification.
Search by what matters
Filter by specialty (knee replacement, spine surgery, sports medicine, and more), city or state, and accepted insurance plan. No account required.
Verified credentials
Board certification, medical school, residency, and fellowship training are displayed where available. Claimed profiles include additional practice information.
Free for patients
The patient-facing directory is free. Surgeons pay to claim and enhance their profile. Search results are never paid placement.
Editorial standards
The /resource section contains patient education articles written to Harvard Health Blog standards - authoritative, plain-language medical information grounded in published clinical evidence. Articles are reviewed by our editorial team and updated when evidence changes.
- No paid editorial placement - article topics are chosen for search demand and patient utility, not sponsor relationships
- Medical claims reference published research or established clinical guidelines
- Articles include a last-reviewed date visible to readers
- Content distinguishes between established evidence and expert opinion
